V-Dem – Democracy Report 2026

An annual global assessment of democratic development, democratic decline and autocratization. The 2026 report analyses democracy through electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative and egalitarian dimensions and examines global trends, autocratizing/ democratizing countries, freedom of expression, media, civil society, elections and checks and balances.

Reporters Without Borders

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index compares press freedom in 180 countries and territories, examining the political, legal, economic, sociocultural and safety conditions in which journalists work. The 2026 edition reports the lowest global average score in the Index’s 25-year history, with 52.2% of countries classified as “difficult” or “very serious.”

CJI / Mediawise / BROD

A Romanian media-education platform developed by the Centre for Independent Journalism (CJI). It provides educational resources and teacher training focused on critical thinking, media literacy, information verification, disinformation, journalism, freedom of expression, algorithms and responsible participation in the digital environment. The broader programme has been implemented in hundreds of Romanian schools.

A UNESCO handbook providing educators and journalism trainers with a structured approach to understanding and teaching fake news, misinformation, disinformation, information disorder, verification and fact-checking. It contains teaching modules covering topics such as digital/ social-media literacy and verification practices.

Digi-Civis – Promoting Digital Citizenship Education în School

A practical guidance resource on integrating Digital Citizenship Education (DCE) into schools. It explains why digital citizenship matters and provides strategies such as integrating DCE into the curriculum, using real-world scenarios, promoting digital/media literacy, modelling positive online behaviour, involving parents and communities, addressing emotional and social dimensions, and updating school policies.

Mediawise Society’s Educational Resources page is a free collection of lesson plans, educational activities, teaching materials, guides and interactive resources designed to develop media and digital competences. The collection includes resources on media literacy, misinformation, propaganda, critical thinking, online safety, democracy, digital culture and AI in education.

Council of Europe – Digital Citizenship Education Handbook

The Digital Citizenship Education Handbook provides information, tools and good practices for developing children’s and young people’s digital citizenship competences. It focuses on three overarching areas: Being Online, Well-being Online, and Rights Online, covering 10 domains including media and information literacy, ethics and empathy, privacy and security, active participation, and rights and responsibilities.
