The UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Students is a global framework designed to help educators integrate AI learning objectives into school curricula. It prepares students to become responsible and creative users and co-creators of AI, with an emphasis on human agency, ethics, critical thinking, technical understanding and AI system design.
Why it matters for ENACT-AI
The resource directly supports AI literacy, critical thinking, ethical AI use, responsible citizenship, human agency, inclusion and sustainable AI. It is particularly relevant for developing young people's ability to critically understand and evaluate AI and participate responsibly in an AI-shaped society.
Learning outcomes
Learners can: understand fundamental AI concepts and their social implications; critically evaluate AI systems and solutions; recognize ethical issues, bias and risks; use AI safely and responsibly; understand human accountability and agency; develop problem-scoping and AI design skills; and progress from Understand → Apply → Create.
Suggested activity
AI in Our Lives – Critical Evaluation & Design Challenge: Students select an AI system they encounter in everyday life, identify its purpose, benefits, risks, possible bias and impact on people/environment. They then discuss whether it should be redesigned and create a short proposal for a more ethical, inclusive and sustainable version.
