The detailed description on p. 57 expands the above method with concrete instructions and materials, emphasizing student participation and critical discussion of AI’s limits and possible misuse.

A two-lesson (2×50 minutes, expandable to a project half-day) unit for 14–19 year-olds that uses self-reflection, group work, and discussion to explore how democracy might evolve by 2040. After a historical review of democratic milestones and an open debate on whether things were “better before,” students split into groups of 4-6 to design their own 2040 future scenario covering politics, population, education, media, and the role of AI, then create a poster and symbolic image before presenting their vision to the class. The method closes with a comparative discussion of which scenario is most realistic or desirable and a personal reflection on what each student can do to keep democracy strong and use media responsibly.

Why it matters for ENACT-AI

In particular, the “Ich, Bot?! – KI verstehen, nutzen und durchschauen” module introduces students to AI concepts, large language models, prompting, AI-generated images, bots and algorithmic manipulation. The wider collection also develops the critical media and democratic competences needed to understand and responsibly navigate AI-generated information and digital manipulation.

Learning outcomes

Learners will be able to:

critically evaluate digital information, images, news and online sources;
identify framing, emotionalisation, manipulation and misinformation;
use basic digital research and verification techniques;
understand basic concepts related to AI, algorithms, bots and AI-generated content;
formulate and improve prompts for AI tools;
recognise potential risks and limitations of AI-generated information;
reflect on the relationship between media, information and democracy;
participate in respectful, evidence-based discussions and debates;
develop greater awareness of their own role as active and informed citizens.

Suggested activity

Use the “Ich, Bot?! – Understanding, Using and Seeing Through AI” module as a 50-minute classroom activity. Begin with the question “What do you think AI can and cannot do?”. Introduce the basic concept of a Large Language Model, followed by a short prompt workshop in which students compare weak and effective prompts. Students then analyse examples of real and AI-generated images and discuss how AI can be used for both creative purposes and manipulation. Finish with a short quiz and reflection on how students can critically evaluate AI-generated content.
