Elements of AI is a free online course developed by the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn to help people understand the fundamentals of artificial intelligence. It explains what AI is, what it can and cannot do, how machine learning works and how AI may affect individuals and society.
The course combines accessible theoretical content with practical exercises and reflection activities. It requires no previous knowledge of programming or advanced mathematics and can be completed independently at the learner’s own pace.
Why it matters for ENACT-AI
Elements of AI supports ENACT-AI by giving young people and educators the foundational knowledge needed to participate critically in discussions about artificial intelligence and its role in society. Understanding how AI systems work helps learners assess AI-generated information, recognise limitations and bias, and question decisions influenced by algorithms.
The course also encourages reflection on the social consequences of AI, including its effects on employment, privacy, equality and democratic life. Suggested activity
Ask participants to complete one selected chapter before a group session. During the session, they identify one opportunity and one risk associated with the AI applications discussed in the chapter. The groups then compare their conclusions and develop a short set of recommendations for the responsible use of AI in education, public communication or democratic participation.
