A report on a national research conducted in Croatia on the topic of mental health and AI use. Research on the relationship between artificial intelligence, mental health and Generation Z. The study explores how young people perceive and use AI, including its potential benefits, risks and impact on wellbeing, providing insights into the attitudes and experiences of Gen Z in relation to rapidly developing AI technologies.

Why it matters for ENACT-AI

The resource supports AI literacy and critical thinking by encouraging reflection on how AI affects young people's everyday lives and wellbeing. It is particularly relevant to youth safeguarding because it addresses the potential psychological and social implications of AI use and can help young people think critically about healthy, responsible and balanced engagement with AI.

Learning outcomes

Learners can identify potential benefits and risks of AI use for young people's wellbeing, critically reflect on their own relationship with AI, discuss how AI may influence emotions, behaviour and decision-making, recognise potential risks to mental wellbeing, and develop principles for responsible and healthy AI use.

Suggested activity

Present learners with selected findings or statements from the research and ask them to work in small groups to classify them as potential benefits, risks or areas requiring further investigation. Follow with a discussion on how AI can influence wellbeing, relationships and everyday decision-making. Learners then create a personal or group “Healthy and Responsible AI Use” guide containing practical recommendations for young people.
